From Soller town station, one takes the tram to Porto Soller (but not all at once, please!) The trams are a mixture of original vehicles (like this one).......... .......... plus second-hand motor cars from Lisbon, like this (and of course, with British trucks and elecrtical equipment)............ ................... hauling a mix of original trailers and these new-build bogie ones............. ....................... of which this is a brand-new, yet-to-enter-service example. Having run through the main town square, (and had its picture taken by all the tourists) .................... ............the tramway dives onto its own private right of way between the houses, with numerous road crossings protected by traffic lights which are triggered by the tram driver with a zapper (called Frank, of course). Further down, the tramway runs through orange groves........................ ........ before emerging alongside the new, freshly-widened main road............ ...... and trundling along the sea front........ ....... surely one of the nicest settings for a tramway, anywhere! The trams terminate by the Naval Base................. ..... before returning to Soller. The zapper also operates the barriers which let trams into the station yard to run round. The station should (according to the public timetable) be quiet between 1400 and 1830 as there are no public trains, BUT....................... .............There are a number of non-scheduled trains for booked parties - here's a picture of one of them arriving! Just below the station, there's a new tourist information point................ ....... which has a plate on it giving a (very) potted history. |
