In January 2011 I got me one of the last wagons produced by Brandbright, using the castings made by Talisman Castings. It was a simple little wagon, as can be seen by the box lid label.......... The bodywork was a more-or-less conventional design, built in much the same way as any other kit............ ............... with the addition of little block spacers.............. ........... to space the inner and outer solebars - all very simple. Richard said he was intending to re-do the wooden parts as laser-cut ones, but it never happened and the wagon is (as far as I know) no longer available. The REALLY nice detail came with the castings for the sides - all beautifully made. Once I'd glued the castings to the wooden body, I drilled through the panels......... ............ fastened track tacks through the holes to simulate bolt heads..............
............. and cut off the excess length, to represent the shaft of each bolt. Once I'd fastened on the end pieces............ ........ the sides hinged most satisfactorily!
The drop sides are secured with a tiny pin and chain at each end. Once the wheels and couplings were on...................... ............I went a bit mad with the Dremel to give the finished wagon that "well worn" look, but decided to leave it unpainted.......... ............ which was a little unfortunate, as storage (once) in a damp tool box has resulted in mould growth which has disfigured the once clean, white wood. The question is, do I now paint it, or rub it back down to a "bare wood" finish, maybe with a coat or two of flat varnish? |
