LOCO TOOL BOXES

WAS THIS A STONELEIGH “BEST BUY”??

I'm always on the lookout for a bargain, so when I saw Jurassic Models selling laser-cut tool box kits at 99p each, I had to have a few! The first one got made up “as is” and came out fine, but it lacked a little “je ne sais quois”: the second one, however, was a Different Matter.

I'd picked up some Generic Hinges from Mr Back 2 Bay 6, but discovering that I had no Unhinged Generics in the MDLR Works, I used a pair on the next toolbox. The trick is to fix the hinges to both halves of the lid BEFORE you take anything out of the “fret” – there's a lot more to hold on to if you do it this way, and the two parts of the lid stay perfectly aligned! The hinges needed a touch with a drill to open the holes up so the minute brass pins I'd got in stock would pass through the holes – this was followed by drilling pilot holes in the ply with an even finer drill for the pins themselves. Once you've got the pins partially inserted, it will do no harm at all to put a smear of superglue on each pin before finally tapping it home. This stops the pins wanting to come out again – look closely at the picture!

Once that's all done, the rest's an absolute doddle! Apply your choice of wood stain (I used walnut), fetch all the bits out of the fret, assemble the box using superglue, re-treat with stain if needed and varnish. Seeemples!
