THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MDLR

In 1987, the summer before construction started, I invited the East Midlands Group of the 16mm Association to see what the garden looked like before I started work, so they brought Much Standing, Nick Kirby's portable layout, to run on. This view was taken from our bedroom window.

We even had a 45mm gauge track in the garage (something which would be impossible now - you oughta see it!)

This view shows the house and the rest of the back garden.

In Spring 1988, all the walls were built and the main part of the bed was filled with roadstone, topped up with limestone off the drive............

.................The rockery stone went in.......................... (note the walls for the meths-fired steaming bay - you need access UNDER the loco for THAT!)

.......... followed by a little top soil!

Tracklaying (Brandbright track set in ballast-with-concrete-in) was not a great success as the construction was too rigid and gave a very "hard ride" - it all got ripped up and relaid the next year....................

....... but at least I could start running trains!
