The Soller Railway (Ferrocarril de Sóller) has its station just across the road from the modernised Government Railway, but unlike that line, it's operated continuously, celebrating 75 years of electric operation in 2004. The motive power is the 4 original railcar /locos built for the electrification in 1929. This is a view up the line on the flatter section before you reach............ ....................... Bunyola station, which marks the beginning of the mountain section. Above Soller itself, there's a "viewing platform" station, where the staff have a chat.......... ............ the tourists take pictures, and (quite incidentally)................ The Palma train from Soller passes. In Soller yard, this brake van.................... of which this is an end view is to be found, as well as..................... This Renault inspection car, and in the depot................. .................this tower wagon. I didn't at first realise, but the coaches on the train are all modern, though built in the traditional style. They're fitted with modern tram-type seats which are MUCH more comfortable than the wooden ones of 30-odd years ago. Here's one being finished in the works. As all the locos are fitted with whistles (and as the old signs were very badly faded) the railway has commisioned this new design. From Soller you take the tram to Porto Soller............... At least the ticket's fairly spectacular, but at 11 Euros I'd expect something fairly decent............. |
